A practical brief checklist for dimensions, fixing, power, controls and installation questions before a bespoke lighting quotation.
Start with the space
Record the room dimensions, ceiling height and the furniture or circulation zone below the proposed light. Include plans or photographs with a clear scale reference. A decorative image is useful for discussing appearance, but it does not specify weight, fixing, power or safe clearance.
Separate design from engineering
List the required finish, approximate envelope, hanging arrangement and intended visual effect. Ask which dimensions can be changed for the selected design. The building substrate, fixing method and allowable load must be checked by a qualified installer or engineer; do not infer them from a catalogue photograph.
Confirm power and control
State the local supply, desired switching or dimming arrangement and any building-control requirements. Ask for confirmed lamp or module details, drivers, control compatibility and maintenance access. Terms such as dimmable or LED are not enough to establish compatibility with a particular control system.
Agree the approval path
Ask what drawings, material samples or mock-ups are proposed, who signs them off and what is included in the quotation. Record delivery, installation responsibility and site-readiness requirements separately. A requested date is not an accepted production or arrival promise.
